Key takeaways
- Benham spent over a decade in finance before joining Tony Bloom’s Premier Bet as a trader in 2001.
- He founded Smartodds in 2004, a company built around statistical models of football matches.
- He took control of Brentford in 2012, when it was in the third tier, and the club reached the Premier League in 2021.
- His core idea: results are noisy, so judge teams and bets on underlying performance and probability, not outcomes.
Matthew Benham is one half of English football’s most famous rivalry between owners, and both halves came from betting. Where Tony Bloom built Starlizard and Brighton, Benham built Smartodds and Brentford. Their shared belief: probability beats opinion.
From the City to betting
Benham was born in 1968 and grew up a Brentford fan, attending his first match at age 11. He studied physics at Oxford and spent about twelve years working in finance in the 1990s.
In 2001 he left to work as a trader at Premier Bet, the betting business run by Tony Bloom. He learned how a sharp betting operation worked from the inside. The two later fell out; Bloom took the dispute to court, and it was eventually settled.
Smartodds
In 2004 Benham founded Smartodds, a company that builds statistical models of football and other sports. The approach mirrors what every serious bettor tries to do:
- Model matches using detailed performance data, not headlines or reputations.
- Estimate the true probability of each outcome.
- Compare those probabilities with market prices and act where they disagree.
Benham has also been reported as the owner of the betting exchange Matchbook.
The key idea: results are noisy
One of Benham’s central beliefs, and the one that shaped his football clubs, is that league tables and results contain a lot of luck. A team can win games it deserved to lose, or lose games it dominated. Underlying measures, such as the quality of chances created and conceded, are a better guide to how good a team really is and how it will perform next.
Bettors know this problem well. Short-term profit and loss say little about whether your bets were good. That’s why sharp bettors track closing line value instead of relying on results.

In 2007, with Brentford struggling financially, Benham took over some of the club’s loans on generous terms. In 2012 he took full control, with the club in the third tier.
He then ran it differently from almost anyone in English football. Brentford hired two co-directors of football, including Phil Giles, a former Smartodds quantitative analyst, and used data to find undervalued players, often from overseas leagues, develop them, and sell them for big profits.
Brentford won promotion to the Premier League in 2021, reaching the top flight for the first time in 74 years, and moved into a new stadium. For a club of its size and budget, that’s an extraordinary achievement.
Benham also became majority owner of Danish club FC Midtjylland in 2014, which won its first Danish league title the following season with a similar approach. He sold his shares in the club in 2023.
What you can borrow from Matthew Benham
- Judge process, not outcomes. A losing week doesn’t mean bad bets; a winning week doesn’t mean good ones. Track the quality of your prices with CLV and let results catch up.
- Models beat reputations. Markets overreact to headlines and recent results. That’s where +EV prices come from. See positive EV betting.
- Patience through variance. Benham’s clubs stuck with their approach through bad runs. Your bankroll plan should assume bad runs too. See bankroll and variance.
- Size bets sensibly. Treat each edge as an estimate, not a certainty, and stake a fraction of Kelly.
- Buy what’s undervalued. Whether it’s a player or a price, the principle is the same.
