Key takeaways

  • A bonus bet pays profit only. The book keeps the bonus amount, so standard hedging math doesn’t apply.
  • Hedge stake = bonus × (promo odds − 1) ÷ hedge odds, all in decimal. That locks the same profit on both outcomes.
  • Longer odds convert a higher share of the bonus, usually 65% to 80%, but need a much bigger cash hedge.
  • Always place the bonus bet first, confirm it’s accepted, then hedge immediately.

If you’ve signed up for a US sportsbook in the last few years, you’ve probably been offered something like “Bet $5, get $200 in bonus bets.” Most people spend those bonus bets on parlays and lose them. There’s a better option: hedge each bonus bet with real money at a second sportsbook so you end up with cash whichever side wins.

This is called bonus bet conversion, and it’s the foundation of promo-based betting. It’s also the lowest-risk way to profit from sportsbooks, because once a conversion is placed, the outcome of the game doesn’t matter.

Why bonus bets need special math

A bonus bet (also called a free bet or bet credit) behaves differently from a cash bet in one important way: the stake is not returned. Industry shorthand for this is SNR, stake not returned.

  • A $100 cash bet at +300 that wins pays $400: $300 profit plus your $100 back.
  • A $100 bonus bet at +300 that wins pays $300: the profit only.

That missing $100 is why a bonus bet is worth less than its face value, and why you can’t just bet equal amounts on both sides. The hedge has to be sized to the bonus bet’s profit, not its payout.

The conversion formula

Convert all odds to decimal first (the odds converter helps). Then:

Hedge stake = bonus amount × (promo odds − 1) ÷ hedge odds Locked profit = hedge stake × (hedge odds − 1) Conversion rate = locked profit ÷ bonus amount

The hedge stake makes both outcomes pay the same. If the bonus bet wins, its profit covers the lost hedge. If the hedge wins, its profit is yours and the bonus bet expires unused.

Step by step: converting a $500 bonus bet

Say you have a $500 bonus bet at Book A.

1. Find a market with a long-ish price at Book A and a short price on the other side somewhere else. You find an NBA underdog at +400 at Book A. The favorite is −450 at Book B.

2. Convert to decimal. +400 = 5.00. −450 = 1.222.

3. Size the hedge. 500 × (5.00 − 1) ÷ 1.222 = $1,636.36.

4. Check both outcomes.

If this happens Book A (bonus bet) Book B (hedge) Net
Underdog wins +$2,000 −$1,636.36 +$363.64
Favorite wins $0 (bonus expires) +$363.64 +$363.64

5. Place the bonus bet first, then the hedge. Once Book A accepts the bonus bet, place the hedge at Book B right away, before the odds move.

You’ve turned a $500 bonus into $363.64 of cash: a 72.7% conversion rate. The bonus bet converter does this math for any odds.

Why longer odds convert better

The book keeps the bonus stake, so you want as much of the bet’s value as possible to sit in the profit. That happens at longer odds. At +100, half the bet’s total return is the stake you’ll never see. At +400, only a fifth of it is.

The trade-off is cash. The hedge for a longshot bonus is several times the bonus itself. In the example above, a $500 bonus needed a $1,636 hedge. At +150 against −170 you’d need only $472, but you’d lock in about $278 (55.6%). Our guide to bonus bet conversion rates breaks this down with a full table.

On main lines, very long odds often carry bigger margins, which drags conversion back down. The exception is alternate totals and spreads, where two books often price the same far-off line differently. Pairs like an NFL alternate over at +850 against the under at −900 elsewhere can convert at 85% or better. The catch is the hedge: roughly seven to eight times the bonus. Our guide to conversion rates has the numbers.

Where to look for good conversions

The best conversions come from markets where two books disagree, so the combined margin across both prices is small. Good places to check:

  • NBA and NHL moneylines, which often have big favorites.
  • MLB moneylines with lopsided pitching matchups.
  • Tennis match winners (watch the retirement rules, covered below).
  • Alternate spreads and totals, where you can choose the price you want.

Checking every combination by hand across a dozen apps takes a long time. Promo conversion tools scan the books in your state and rank the pairings by conversion rate. That’s the main job of ProfitDuel’s Promo Converter.

Mistakes that cost money

Hedging before the bonus bet is accepted. If Book A rejects or re-prices your bonus bet, you’re left with an open cash bet at Book B. Always confirm first.

Mismatched markets. Both sides must settle on exactly the same result. A moneyline that includes overtime at one book and a 3-way regulation market at another don’t match. Neither do player props with different “must play” rules.

Tennis retirement rules. Sportsbooks settle retired tennis matches differently. Some void the bet if a player retires; others settle it once a set is complete. If your two books use different rules, a retirement can leave you with a losing hedge and a voided bonus bet.

Using a stale price. Odds move. Refresh both apps right before placing.

Letting bonus bets expire. Most expire within 7 to 30 days. Convert them early.

Splitting when you can’t. Some books issue a bonus as one token you can’t split. Others issue several smaller tokens. Check before you plan your hedge.

What you need to get started

  • Accounts at two or more licensed sportsbooks in a state where you’re physically located and of legal age (21+ in most states).
  • Working capital for hedges. For welcome offers, $1,000 to $2,500 gives you room to hedge longer odds. Smaller promos need less. See how big a bankroll you need.
  • A spreadsheet or tracker to log each conversion. You’ll want it for taxes, which we cover in sports betting taxes in 2026.

Once you’re comfortable with bonus bets, the same idea extends to no-sweat bets, profit boosts, and full welcome offer sequences.

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw a bonus bet directly?

No. Bonus bets have no cash value until they win. Only the profit from a winning bonus bet becomes withdrawable cash, which is why you hedge: it guarantees you capture a predictable share of the bonus either way.

What if the bonus bet side wins? Do I lose my hedge?

Yes, the hedge stake is lost, but the bonus bet’s winnings cover it plus your locked profit. If the hedge wins instead, the hedge profit is your locked profit and the bonus bet simply expires. Both outcomes net the same amount.

Do I need accounts at two sportsbooks?

Yes. The bonus bet goes on one side at the book that issued it, and the hedge goes on the opposite side at a different book. Having accounts at several books gives you more hedge options and better conversion rates.

How fast do bonus bets expire?

Usually 7 to 30 days after they’re issued, depending on the sportsbook and promotion. Check the expiry in your account and convert well before it.
